Offered here is an Egyptian high priest wearing a headdress, robed with detail hieroglyphics holding a sacred cow/bull. This magnificent bronze is attributed to Emile-Louis Picault (1833-1915). The French sculptor, studied under Louis Royer, the Dutch sculptor, and exhibited a wide range of sculpture at the Salon between 1863 and 1909. His Egyptian subjects are some of his most popular works and follow in the tradition of ethnographical decorative sculpture in France during the latter part of the 19th Century.
The originals are part of the George Powell of Nanteos Bequest given to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1882.
This inspired limited edition #7/50 compliments the original and exudes an air of importance as the high-priest in Egypt provided Pharaoh’s valuable political advice, guidance and knowledge. The quality of this refined art is rarely found in casted bronzes except here. Created using the lost wax method, the red and gold trimmings were cold painted.
