Offered here is an Egyptian Scribe wearing a headdress, robed with the hide of a wild animal with detailed hieroglyphics holding an amphora. The scribes were highly prized by both the pharaoh and the priesthood, so much so that in some of the pharaoh's tombs, the pharaoh himself is depicted as a scribe in pictographs. This stunning bronze is attributed to Emile-Louis Picault (1833-1915). The French sculptor studied under Louis Royer, the Dutch sculptor, and exhibited a wide range of sculpture at the Salon between 1863 and 1909. His Egyptian subjects are some of his most popular works and follow in the tradition of ethnographical decorative sculpture in France during the latter part of the 19th Century.

The originals are part of the George Powell of Nanteos Bequest given to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1882.
